The Job Hunting Handbook

DO YOU HELP PEOPLE FIND JOBS?

FYI: Here are three mistakes that keep most people from getting

the jobs they want and need

Most job hunters want to find a job on their own. That's great. But you might want to give them a roadmap. I visit a lot of job fairs. Job fairs are a great place for me to talk with job hunters, recruiters, and employers.

Recruiters and employers frequently tell me that job hunters don’t know how to persuade a manager to hire them. Here are three important tips you can share with your job hunters:

1. When you submit an online job application or resume, they are first read by a computer. Now, if your application or resume does not contain the five or six specific skills listed in the employer’s job advertisement, the computer will likely reject you as unqualified—because you don’t have the skills needed to do their job. Always match your skills to the needs of the job and mention those skills by name in your job application and resume. Also give a brief example of what you accomplished with each skill. (See page 10 in The Job Hunting Handbook)

2. Instead of competing with dozens or even hundreds of people for every job opening you want, ask some friends who work in your occupation or field to give your resume and cover letter to their managers and to put in a good word for you. Nine out of ten managers prefer to hire the friends and relatives of their employees—often with little competition and in half the usual time (See page 20 in The Job Hunting Handbook)

3. Show some personality during your job interview. Know which questions the hiring manager might ask you. (Have AI  build a list of questions for you). Plan and rehearse your answers. Give examples or tell the stories of what you accomplished. Use facial expressions and hand gestures to make the stories more interesting. Add humor when appropriate. Use a little mirroring. Smile. Hiring Managers prefer people who are friendly, prepared, and excited to be there. (See pages 38, 44 in The Job Hunting Handbook)

Hi. I’m Harry Dahlstrom.
I wrote The Job Hunting Handbook

It’s used by 8,000 job centers, career centers, and outplacement centers nationwide. Together we’ve helped millions of people get the jobs they need and want.

And here’s a surprise

The Job Hunting Handbook is NOT another 250 page textbook. It’s the size of a news magazine, 8 by 10 inches. You can read it, cover to cover, in an hour or so and get started right away. The chapters are short, easy to read, easy to use, and they include material you won’t find anywhere else.

Here’s a brief snapshot of what’s included in The Job Hunting Handbook

How to turn the employer’s job requirements into your list of accomplishments, even if you’re a first-time job hunter (see pages 8, 10 in The Job Hunting Handbook).

Just fill in the blanks to create a one-page resume showing that you are the solution to the hiring manager’s needs (see page 19).

Set up a steady stream of job interviews that can last for weeks and weeks to come, with AIDA and the 5-25-100 method (see pages 21, 24).

Make a great impression by showing good manners and a little personality while answering 50 tough interview questions with ease (see pages 38, 44).

Plus real tips on dress, manners, enthusiasm, references, skills, resumes, job applications, cover letters, sales pitches, phone calls, follow-up, wages, and so much more.

Would you like to read a dozen pages from The Job Hunting Handbook, now?
