Harry Dahlstrom is the author of The
Job Hunting Handbook, Surviving A Layoff, Now Hiring— Apply
Yourself, Turn a Job Fair into a Job Offer, and other titles.
He has been writing about job search for over twenty-five years.
He
got his start as director of recruitment and marketing at a small
New England business college. He assisted the college’s
career center and developed workshops to help graduating students
apply business-marketing principles to their job hunt.
The college
eventually merged with a larger institution and layoffs followed.
In addition to delivering the sad news to staff and faculty,
Harry helped with their resume writing and job-search plans.
Months
after receiving his own pink slip, people continued to ask for
resume writing and job-hunting advice. So, Harry put his ideas
on paper and gave away copies so people could help themselves.
A number of friends suggested he send
the text to a publisher. He did. After several large publishers
declined the book simply because it “wasn’t thick
enough,” Harry
self-published his 48 page book.
The Job Hunting Handbook has since sold
over 7 million copies and is probably the second best-selling
job book in the United States. Over the years The Job Hunting
Handbook has gone through 15 major revisions and several design
changes. But it still contains only 48 pages.
Before graduating
from Harvard University he served two tours with the U.S. Navy
in Vietnam.
Harry lives in Massachusetts with his
best friend and wife, Gail. They have three grown children.
